Judy Chicago’s Herstory exhibition at the New Museum opened on October 12th and will be on view through the 14th of January, 2024. It is a comprehensive and thorough show that spans six decades of her life, starting with early works made at the end of her student years (mid 1960s) and ending with the present. The bulk of her work is shown on floors 2 and 3, with an installation, The City of Ladies, her curation of art, texts and video by female artists throughout history, on floor 4 (this is really cool but we won’t cover it since it’s not entirely “hers”). You already know a lot about Judy from Study Hall, but some of the works included in this show strike me as incredibly important, both for personal reasons, and within the history of art. Nothing can take the place of seeing art in person and feeling the way it invades your space or invites you into its physicality, but I’m going to try to provide a run-down of some of my favorite series on view, in case you won’t be seeing the show in real life.
